Bicentennial Man

  • Bicentennial Man follows the life and times of Andrew (Robin Williams), a robot programmed to perform menial tasks, but who displays uncharacteristically human emotions, curiosity and creativity. Andrew soon discovers what it truly means to be a human being with the help of Little Miss (Hallie Kate Eisenberg) and his understanding owner (Sam Neill). Andrew is no ordinary robot! System Requireme
From the acclaimed director of MRS. DOUBTFIRE, Academy Award(R)-winner Robin Williams (1997, Best Actor, GOOD WILL HUNTING) stars in a delightfully heartwarming comedy about one extraordinary android who just wants to be an ordinary guy! It doesn't take long for the Martin family to realize Andrew (Williams), who was purchased as a mere "household appliance," is no run-of-the-mill robot! Funny, incredibly lifelike, and possessing an astounding level of creativity, this special machine soon takes on a l! ife of his own -- and eventually begins a centuries-long quest to achieve true humanity! A crowd-pleasing comedy hit -- everyone is sure to love this touchingly entertaining movie treat!Bicentennial Man was stung at the 1999 box office, due no doubt in part to poor timing during a backlash against Robin Williams and his treacly performances in two other, then-recent releases, Jakob the Liar and Patch Adams. But this near-approximation of a science fiction epic, based on works by Isaac Asimov and directed, with uncharacteristic seriousness of purpose, by Chris Columbus (Mrs. Doubtfire), is much better than one would have known from the knee-jerk negativity and box-office indifference.

Williams plays Andrew, a robot programmed for domestic chores and sold to an upper-middle-class family, the Martins, in the year 2005. The family patriarch (Sam Neill) recognizes and encourages Andrew's uncommon characteristics, particularly his artis! tic streak, sensitivity to beauty, humor, and independence of! spirit. In so doing, he sets Williams's tin man on a two-century journey to become more human than most human beings.

As adapted by screenwriter Nicholas Kazan, the movie's scale is novelistic, though Columbus isn't the man to embrace with Spielbergian confidence its sweeping possibilities. Instead, the Home Alone director shakes off his familiar tendencies to pander and matures, finally, as a captivating storyteller. But what really makes this film matter is its undercurrent of deep yearning, the passion of Andrew as a convert to the human race and his willingness to sacrifice all to give and take love. Williams rises to an atypical challenge here as a futuristic Everyman, relying, perhaps for the first time, on his considerable iconic value to make the point that becoming human means becoming more like Robin Williams. Nothing wrong with that. --Tom Keogh

Extreme Dating

  • Four twenty-something friends believe that the key to winning over their true loves is to place themselves in extreme situations. They plot a fake kidnapping but the plan goes awry when the kidnappers turn out to be ex-cons with plans of their own. The remaining friends must now rescue the captives and manage to avoid the law at the same time.Running Time: 96 min. Format: DVD MOVIE Genre:&nbs
Danny (Chris Pine) is smart, handsome, popular, and blind... and not just physically: He also can't see how wild women are for him. Even his sexy therapist (Jane Seymour) can't keep her clothes on around Danny. After a series of painful "blind dates" set up by his brother (Kaye Thomas), Danny falls for a young Indian woman named Leeza (Anjali Jay), and finally everything seems picture perfect. But when cultures clash, and Leeza reveals that she's been promised to someone else, Danny must prove to her tha! t there's more to love than meets the eye!A romantic comedy disguised as an American Pie-type sex romp, Blind Dating tells the story of a sweet young blind man who falls for a woman who is engaged to be married. Hottie Chris Pine plays Danny, who has never had a serious girlfriend. His annoying but well-meaning brother Larry (Eddie Kaye Thomas, American Pie) is intent on helping Danny lose his virginity by hooking him up with several inappropriate women. Then there's Dr. Evans (Jane Seymour), Danny's unorthodox therapist who has the odd habit of undressing as he talks about his dates. Though the scenes are played for laughs, there's something inherently creepy about them since Dr. Evans clearly needs to take a class on boundaries. Blind Dating has an uneven feel because it's trying to be too many things at the same time. It would've fared better had it concentrated less on Larry's shenanigans and more on the budding romance between Danny and Leez! a (Anjali Jay), the receptionist at Danny's eye doctor's offic! e. Becau se one of the central characters is blind, and another works for an optometrist, it is giving nothing away to say that part of the plot involves a surgical procedure that could potentially restore Danny's eyesight. It would've been nice to learn more about Leeza's Indian background; the film implies that the marriage her parents have arranged for her is a bad one (and it probably is). But it would've been interesting to see the family presented as more than caricatures. While not a great film, Blind Dating has some sweet moments, courtesy of Pine and Jay. --Jae-Ha KimDumped by the man she thought was perfect for her, newly-single Lucy (Monica Potter) continues her search for Mr. Right. Set up on a series of blind dates, she meets five handsome and eligible bachelors, each with his own charms . . . and flaws. There's the macho jock (Gael Garcia Bernal), the handsome surgeon (David Boreanaz), the divorced writer (John Hannah) and the uptight executive (Henry Thom! as). Has she finally met the man of her dreams or will her dating nightmare never end? I'M WITH LUCY is a charming and endearing romantic comedy in the tradition of Bridget Jones's Diary and Serendipity. After being unexpectedly dumped by her dream boyfriend, Lucy (Monica Potter, Along Came a Spider) wants to hide away in her apartment--but her friends set her up with a series of blind dates: a shy entomologist (John Hannah, Sliding Doors), a sensual playwright (Gael Garcia Bernal, Y Tu Mamá También), a hunky doctor (David Boreanaz, Angel), a self-centered baseball player (Anthony LaPaglia, Lantana), and a bickering businessman (Henry Thomas, All the Pretty Horses). We know she ends up marrying one of these five guys; trying to figure out which one, as the dates unfold in flashbacks, makes the movie engaging--up to a point. The script loses focus and Potter, though pretty, is too bland to sustain interest (th! ough it should be said that she shows more flair in I'm wi! th Lucy< /I> than in her previous romantic comedy efforts, such as the laughably bad Head Over Heels). --Bret FetzerThe awkwardness. The anxiety. The sweaty palms. Ah, the joys of a blind date. But then there's the laughing about it afterward with friends, and doesn't that make it all better?

A hilarious collection of more than 50 true stories of dates gone crazily wrongâ€"though sometimes with a happy endingâ€"My Blind Date Went Blind! is as much fun as sharing stories with a best friend. Here's the date who shows up with his soon-to-be ex-wife in the backseat. The date who thinks it's sexy to eat a bowl of noodles in one mouthful, tearing off the dangling ends with both hands. The date who can’t pay for the $2.00 matinee when he discovers the price went up to $3.00. The forgetful woman who administers the same pop quizâ€"Can you spell "segue"? Who is Frank Lloyd Wright?â€"two dates in a row. The rabid Harry Potter fan who just won't stop calli! ng (with updates about his therapeutic progress). And the date of the title, who loses his vision in the middle of dinnerâ€"a literal moment of hysterical blindnessâ€"and needs to be walked home. (Oh, and he wasn't able to pay the check either, of course.)

With sidebars including Worst Pickup Lines Ever and Very Bad Movie Choices for First Dates, it is the perfect antidote to the dating blahs: You just have to laugh.

Media Type: DVDBruce Willis's first starring vehicle was this 1987 comedy by Blake Edwards (Victor/Victoria), in which the actor plays a yuppie set up on a blind date with a beautiful blonde (Kim Basinger). Everything goes swimmingly until Willis does what he was warned not to do: give the lady alcohol, which causes her to get entirely out of control. The one-note joke basically turns the film into a succe! ssion of set pieces in which Willis has to keep up with Basing! er, bail her out of trouble, or get out of the way of her hotheaded former boyfriend (John Larroquette). Willis is fine, Basinger is impressively unhinged, Larroquette is hilarious, and Phil Hartman has a nice role as the friend who set up Willis's evening from hell. The slapstick shtick is classic Edwards, but the film is not Edwards at his most inspired. Consider Blind Date the work of a good filmmaker in a holding pattern. --Tom Keogh
